In direct geographical proximity to the TFZ are modern production facilities (primarily for companies involved in aviation and electronic engineering), innovative research-based firms, the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt, and the RIZ, or Regional Innovation & Start-Up Center for Lower Austria. Construction is scheduled to begin in the near future on the MedAustron Cancer Research Center, currently the largest research project in Austria (with costs of approx. Euro 200m). Up to 1,400 cancer patients each year will receive a new form of ion beam therapy generated by a particle accelerator. In the future, increased focus will be on healthcare thanks to the opening of the MedAustron Cancer Research Center for Ion Therapy.
